The water-cooled twin screw extruder barrel is a heat exchanger. Like all heat exchangers, the water channel is prone to scaling and deterioration. Many operators notice that the cooling performance of a new extruder is much better than that of a twin screw extruder that is three or four years old. The old machine has a layer of scale attached to the inner surface of the water channel, which affects the heat transfer efficiency. Using a certain concentration of acid to clean the barrel can remove the scale and keep the good heat transfer effect of the barrel.
The gearbox is the heart of the dual screw extruder. Therefore, we want to prevent problems with the gearbox and use synthetic gear oil to better protect the gears. The advantages of synthetic gear oil are as follows:
(1) It is more slippery, resulting in less friction;
(2) Gears, bearings, and seals will last longer;
(3) The gear operating temperature is lower and it is quieter;
(4) Synthetic oil does not lose viscosity due to machine shearing;
(5) It maintains high viscosity at high temperatures.
The purpose of the cleaning machine is to remove the residual material in the dual screw extruder and the die, which avoids time-consuming disassembly and cleaning.
Cleaning materials are often divided into two categories: chemical cleaning agents and mechanical friction cleaning agents. Many cleaners have both chemical and abrasive functions. Chemical cleaners will react with plastic residue, pulling it away from mechanical surfaces.
The principle of mechanical friction cleaning is to rub and wash away residual material from the metal surface, using the methods of friction and shear. Processors can find suitable cleaning materials and methods through many trials. No one cleaning material will clean all materials. Processors need to clean materials cheaply and efficiently. For example, in the American Midwest, many operators use corn as a material for cleaning machines because it is readily available and has a good cleaning effect on the machine.
Here are two recommended cleaning agents:
(1) 50% HDPE+50% diatomaceous earth.
(2) HDPE + water + decontamination powder. The HDPE is fed into the screw at the usual rate at the melt temperature. The decontamination powder is stirred into a slurry with water in a bucket, and the slurry is slowly added from the main feeding port. These slurries impact, rub and clean the screw due to foaming.
